The Southern Maine Athletics Association – comprised of 16 schools, including Scarborough – has released its lists of spring accolades, and plenty of Stormers dot the All-Conference and All-Academic teams.
Baseball
SMAA Coach of the Year – Mike D’Andrea
SMAA First Team – Josh Reed (U), Mitchell Wedge (P)
SMAA Second Team – Morgan Pratt (2B)
SMAA All-Defensive Team – Morgan Pratt (2B)
SMAA Honorable Mention – Bayley Welsh
SMAA All-Academic Team – John Timpson
D’Andrea’s award is well-earned; in his first year at the helm in Scarborough, he turned a team that missed the playoffs last season into the tournament three-seed this season. Reed and Wedge are joined on the First Team by such standouts as Sam Troiano (OF) and Griffin Kelley (P) from neighboring South Portland and Logan Drouin (Gorham, P), Troy Bogdahn (Bonny Eagle, P) and Ben Lambert (Thornton, OF/P) from further afield.
Softball
MPA Class A South Regional Runners-Up
SMAA Offensive Player of the Year – Maggie Murphy
SMAA Defensive Player of the Year – Maggie Murphy
SMAA First Team – Lily Volk (P), Maggie Murphy (3B), Chloe Griffin (Reserve), Chloe Gorey (Reserve)
SMAA Second Team – Kaleigh Scoville (1B)
SMAA Honorable Mention – Abbie Murrell, Hannah Ricker
SMAA All-Academic Team – Chloe Gorey
It’s not surprising to see such a large group of Stormers – seven of the team’s regular starters – earning League acclaim; it’s common knowledge the team is consistently one of the best in the State. A number of players from Scarborough’s chief competition this year also made the First- and Second-Team cuts: Jen Jones (Sanford) and Kirsten Lebreux (Biddeford) both join Volk at First-Team pitcher, for instance. Likewise, Danielle Tardiff, Sadie Nelson, Kayla Tibbetts and Katelyn Troiano, all of Windham, join Scoville at Second-Team pitcher, catcher, second baseman and outfielder, respectively.
Boys Lacrosse
MPA Class A State Champions
SMAA First Team – Sam Neugebauer (A), Reece Lagerquist (D)
SMAA Second Team – Cam Nigro (M), Eric Murray (LSM)
SMAA Honorable Mention – Colin Hayward (LSM)
SMAA All-Academic Team – Sam Jacob
It’s a testament to the quality of play in the SMAA, and Class A in general, this season, that there are only a pair of Stormers on the League First Team, and a pair more on the Second Team: The state champs were overflowing with talent – but so were several other squads. Neugebauer and Lagerquist are joined by such standouts as Curtis Knapton (M, also the SMAA’s Player of the Year and an All-American) and Noah Oliver (U) of Westbrook; Jack Fiorini (M) and Nick Mezzanotte (LSM) of South Portland; and Alex York (A), Mat Anderson (D) and Carter Landry (G) of Gorham.
Girls Lacrosse
SMAA First Team – Abby Corbin (A)
SMAA Second Team – Emma Smith (M), Sami Shoebottom (G)
SMAA Honorable Mention – Emma Corvo
SMAA Rookie Team – Maegan Neelon
SMAA All-Academic Team – Lexie Jamieson, Amelia Levesque
The Lady Stormers may have had a tougher-than-usual season, but that doesn’t mean there are no highlights on their roster. Corbin’s firepower matches up nicely alongside that of Maquila DiMastrantonio and Delia Sylvain (both of Massabesic), Faith Sinclair (TA) and Mary Cronin (South Portland), while Shoebottom makes an exceptional last line of defense behind Jen Darasz (Gorham), Mia LaFlamme and Peyton McKeown (both of Biddeford) and Ellie Zukowski (Portland).
Boys Tennis
SMAA Second-Team – John McCloskey (singles)
McCloskey is joined on the Second Team by Peter Gribizis and Quinn Clarke (Portland) and Junxi Xiao (TA) at singles. Ryan Firmin and Kevin Brewer (Gorham), Ian McCallum and Sam Mermin (Portland), and Simon Bellieveau and Jackson Dohse (TA) round out the doubles lineup.
Girls Tennis
MPA Class A South Regional Runners-Up
SMAA First Team – Megan Nathanson (singles), Kaicee Flaherty (doubles), Caitlin Merrill (doubles)
SMAA Second Team – Emily Keenan (singles), Anna Driscoll (doubles), Brielle Hardy (doubles), Olivia Booth-Howe (doubles)
The Lady Stormers looked great on the courts this year, thanks to a talented roster heavy with seniors. Gorham, whom Scarborough wrangled with in the standings and narrowly edged in tournament semis, contribute Avery Arena and Lauren Poirier as First-Team Doublers, and Jenna Cowan and Whitney King as Second-Team singlers. Interestingly, TA, Deering and Windham are the only other teams represented on either squad.
Boys Outdoor Track
MPA Class A State Champions
SMAA All-Conference – Sebastian Osborne (Discus); Sam Rusak (High Jump, Pole Vault, 110 Hurdles, 200, 400); Alex Dionne (Pole Vault); Andrew Sholl (800, 1600, 3200); Colin Tardiff (1600, 3200)
The Gentlemen Storm controlled a number of events across the season. Rusak, Sholl, Tardiff and Co. are joined by standouts like Daniel Guiliani (Shot Put and Discus) and Ruay Bol (High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump) of South Portland; Ernie Ruby (100) of Windham; and Paolo DeMarco (110 Hurdles, 300 Hurdles, 200 Dash, 400 Relay and 1600 Relay) of Deering, who was Rusak’s chief competition at times.
Girls Outdoor Track
SMAA All-Conference – Elizabeth Gentille (Discus), Kirsten Dennen (Pole Vault), Ellen Shaw (100 Hurdles), Bethany Sholl (3200), Laura Volan (3200)
The Lady Storm also repped ably across the track and the field. Ami Beaumier of Bonny Eagle earns the other All-Conference slot in the 3200, and Kiersten Hilton (Westbrook) and Bridget Rossignol (Gorham) round out the Pole Vault contingent. Similarly, Shaw is in good company in the 100 Hurdles, alongside Nina Tasker (Noble) and Callie O’Brien (South Portland).

Scarborough’s Abbie Murrell earned an SMAA Honorable Mention this spring for her work on the softball field.

Scarborough pitcher Mitchell Wedge, the team’s ace this season, earned First Team honors.
