Every third Saturday of the month, a group of us go to Portland, holding signs offering “Free Prayer.” Our last time out coincided with the Pride Portland parade.

After the parade, a woman came up to me and asked, “Are you for gay rights, fair advancement in the workplace, equality for gays, freedom from persecution?” Then, she became a headlight and I became the deer.

I was speechless, but not because I didn’t have an answer. In 25 years of ministry, God has always given me an answer. After she left (I guess the “blue dot” had to fade), the answer came: We were at two different events.

What I saw was pride, the origin of the first sin and the source of all sin thereafter.

Am I for rights, equality and advancement? I am! And so is God. Equality – for all have sinned. Rights – “whosoever believeth in him.” Advancement – “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

And pride? I am proud of a God who forgives upon confession, saves upon faith and gives us Jesus, who is the answer.

We’ll be out again the third Saturday of this month, and I’ll be ready for the next Portland headlight.
