AUGUSTA — A 91-year-old World War II veteran from Maine has finally received a Victory Medal that he earned but was never given.

William Schnorr of Dixfield received the medal on Wednesday during a ceremony in Augusta in the office of Sen. Angus King. Schnorr served in the Army Air Force during the war.

Schnorr’s family says he was a bombardier and gunner in missions over Germany. He left the service with the rank of sergeant in 1945.

King’s office says it’s unclear why Schnorr never received the World War II Victory Medal. The medal is awarded to all military personnel who served between Dec. 7, 1941 and Dec. 31, 1946.

King’s staff worked with Schnorr and his family to acquire the medal. King, an independent, says the medal is “overdue.”
