A man and boy drowned Friday in the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River, the Maine Warden Service said.

The man was identified as Jamie Main, 49, of the Aroostook County town of Crystal, and the boy as Kobe Berry, 13, of Bangor.

Maine game wardens, the Island Falls Fire Department, and Maine State Police responded at 3:30 p.m. to a report that two people were presumed drowned.

The victims had been swimming in the river in Island Falls, the warden service said. Witnesses reported seeing a juvenile struggling in the current near the middle of the river, and an adult male swam out to try rescue him when both became submerged. A search began and included the use of watercraft, aircraft and foot searches along the river.

Main’s body was recovered at 6 p.m. Friday and Berry’s at 8 p.m., the warden service said.
