AUGUSTA — A state legislative committee chairman is calling for a review of a law passed this year that would allow railroad companies to withhold information about hazardous materials traveling through Maine.
The law, which passed without debate over Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s veto, creates a public records exemption for railroad company records describing hazardous materials, their routes and their frequency.
Republican Sen. David Burns, co-chairs the Judiciary Committee, said Wednesday that he’ll ask the panel to consider allowing public access to generic information about such shipments.
Burns also serves as chairman of the state Right-to-Know Advisory Committee. Committee member and Sun Journal Executive Editor Judy Meyer said it’s “odd” to keep secret cargo moving through Maine.
