WELLS — Nick Cousins doubled and then scored on Tyler Bridge’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning, sending Wells to the American Legion state tournament with a 5-4 victory over Staples Crossing in a Zone 4 playoff game.

Erik Aiken had four hits, including a double, and drove in one run for Wells (17-3).

Bridge finished with two RBI and Cousins had two hits and one RBI.

Nick Landis and Aidan Place each had two hits and an RBI for Staples Crossing (13-7).

LIBBY MITCHELL 6, SUMMIT NATRUAL GAS 0: Sam Warren gave up just two hits in eight shutout innings as Libby-Mitchell (7-12) downed Summit Natural Gas (3-16) in a Zone 3 play-in game at Scarborough.

Warren struck out five and walked two.

Libby-Mitchell raced to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning behind an RBI double from Morgan Pratt, who finished with a pair of hits.

Tim Carion made three great defensive plays in center field for Libby-Mitchell, taking extra-base hits away from Summit Natural Gas.

Libby Mitchell advances to face Yankee Ford in the Zone 3 playoffs.

JUNIOR LEGION

MORRILL POST 3, WESTBROOK 2: Hunter Owen hit a sacrifice fly and Noah McHugh added an RBI single during a three-run second inning, and Morrill Post (13-3) held on for a win in a playoff game at Westbrook.

Jacob Poole and Owen combined to pitch a four-hitter for Morrill Post, which will be the top seed in the double-elimination phase of the tournament this weekend at Colby.

Derek Higgins hit a pair of singles for Westbrook, which scored single runs in the fourth and fifth.

GORHAM 5, WINDHAM 0: Nolan Brown threw a two-hitter to lead Gorham (12-6) past Windham (14-4) in a playoff game at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.

Brown struck out three and walked four.

Gorham scored the go-ahead run in the top of the first inning on a two-out double by Will Prescott.

Gorham then added two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Prescott, Steve Klatt and David Drew finished with two hits apiece for Gorham, which advances to the double-elimination phase of the tournament at Colby.

MAINERS 11, NIGHTHAWKS 2: Daniel Wilson went 3 for 3 with a pair of walks, scored three runs and drove in one to pace a 13-hit attack for Sanford (21-14) in a rout of the Upper Valley Nighthawks (13-21) at Hartford, Vermont.

Michael Landestoy added three hits, two runs scored and one RBI for the Mainers, who scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a game they led 5-2.

Sanford starter Troy Miller gave up one unearned run and scattered seven hits while striking out four in five innings to earn the win.

EMPIRE LEAGUE

SURGE 10, WILD 9: Nathan Schwertner hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Surge (24-19) rallied past the New Hampshire Wild (14-26) at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach.

Schwertner finished with three hits and four RBI for Old Orchard Beach, which trailed 9-7 going into the bottom of the eighth after giving up two runs in the top of the inning.

Brandon Cooksey added two hits, two RBI and scored two runs for the Surge, who built a 6-4 lead behind a six-run fourth inning.

Joshua Martinez closed the game with a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.
