The Apple Valley 13-15 Babe Ruth team fell in extra innings 5-4 to Medford, Massachusetts, in the New England regional opener Friday in Lynn, Massachusetts.

“It was a very, very good game,” Apple Valley coach Dan Dion said. “We came back a couple times and then had men on and opportunities to win it in the sixth and seventh.”

Medford struck first with two runs in the first inning. Apple Valley tied the game with a pair of its own in the bottom of the fourth. Medford pulled ahead again with two in the sixth, but Apple Valley roared back for two of its own in the bottom of the frame to square the game again.

The teams played an extra frame and Medford scratched across a single run in the eighth to seal the win.

For Apple Valley, Casey Dion and Avery Beckwith each had two-RBI singles. Jared Beckwith started and went 5 2/3 innings, striking out four. Brian Hewitt pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Apple Valley faces the team representing Western Massachusetts at 10 a.m. Saturday and then finishes pool play when it plays host Lynn at 7 p.m., Sunday.
