A fatal overdose Thursday in Sanford marked the latest that puts Sanford on track for a record number of drug-related deaths this year, the police chief said.

Police were called to 3 Island Ave., where they found Joshua T. Fournier, 26, dead from an apparent overdose, said Police Chief Thomas P. Connolly Jr.

Inside the residence, officers found suspected narcotics and drug paraphernalia. The precise cause and manner of Fournier’s death will be determined by the Maine State Medical Examiner’s Office.

So far this year, five people in Sanford have died of overdoses, out of a total of 23 reported overdoses, Connolly said. Although Connolly could not provide specific data on the number of overdoses in 2015, he said that through last week, the city was on track to see twice the number of overdoses as last year.

“This year it’s really exploded,” Connolly said.

Sanford has a population of roughly 20,900, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
