A suspicious package left outside the entrance to the Planned Parenthood office on Congress Street Tuesday turned out to be a shopping bag containing a box intended for art supplies.

Portland police said they reviewed security footage of the area and saw that the bag was dropped off around 11:30 a.m. by a man wearing a baseball cap and a long-sleeved shirt. The bag was reported around 1 p.m. to the police as suspicious.

Officers established a perimeter between Elm and Temple streets, and closed the Monument Square area to vehicle traffic.

The Portland police bomb squad, known as the hazardous devices unit, arrived about 2:30 p.m., parked near the scene and deployed a robot.
