SACO — The public is invited to weigh in on a state proposal to install rumble strips on part of Route 112, a move officials say would make the road safer.
The public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Saco City Hall, and is hosted by the Maine Department of Transportation.
Rumble strips are a series of raised strips on pavement that alert drivers with sound and vibration. If installed in the center line, they can get the attention of a distracted or drowsy driver who is traveling toward oncoming traffic.
City Administrator Kevin Sutherland said after a fatal accident on Route 112 in December, he asked MDOT officials to review the route and help the city find a solution to make it safer.
The road also meets general MDOT high-risk criteria, according to MDOT Safety Manager Duane Brunell.
The proposal calls for installation of a quieter form of rumble strip called sinusoidal, or mumble strips, in the more urban section from Louden Road to Heath Road, and standard rumble strips from Heath Road to Route 117.
The state plans to install the rumble strips in the fall.
