The woman killed when she was hit by a car Friday evening on Route 1 in Scarborough has been identified as Judith Schwerdtfeger, 76, of Scarborough.

Police said she was hit about 5:45 p.m. when she tried to cross the busy road. The part of the road she tried to cross, just south of Hannaford Drive, is five lanes wide and has no crosswalk.

The elderly woman driver of the car that hit Schwerdtfeger has not been identified and is not likely to be charged, police said Saturday.

Sgt. Steven Thibodeau said traffic was heavy at the time of the collision, it was raining and visibility was poor because of a storm that was passing through.
