Portland, Tri-County win in Babe Ruth 14 pool play
Luke Hill struck out four over seven innings to lead Portland to a 2-1 victory over Bismark, North Dakota, in a pool play matchup of the Babe Ruth 14 World Series in Westfield, Massachusetts.
Cody Sorenson of Bismark (3-1) allowed just four hits over 51/3 innings. Sorenson also put Bismark ahead 1-0 in the second inning on an RBI single.
Portland (3-1) scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on Francis Kiely’s RBI single.
• Wyatt Williamson allowed just two hits over seven innings to lead Tri-County to a 5-1 victory over Arlington, Massachusetts.
Arlington (1-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by Brendan Jones. Tri-County (2-2) answered in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs, highlighted by Janek Luksza’s RBI-double.
Rodney Bean led Tri-County with a double and a single.
TENNIS
MEXICAN OPEN: Ivo Karlovic won his second ATP World Tour title of the year and eighth overall, beating top-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-6 (5), 6-2.
SOCCER
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: Liverpool rallied to beat Arsenal 4-3, while Manchester United began its new era under Jose Mourinho with a 3-1 win at Bournemouth in their openers.
COLLEGES
FOOTBALL: South Carolina Coach Will Muschamp says punter Sean Kelly won’t miss any game time after being arrested on charges including disorderly conduct and trespassing.
Kelly was also charged with causing malicious injury to a tree or house, and trespassing upon property with an injury value of $2,000 or less.
BASKETBALL
NBA: The Oklahoma City Thunder have signed guard Ronnie Price, who played last season for Phoenix, averaging 5.3 points, 2.4 assists and 19.5 minutes.
MOTOR SPORTS
GRAND PRIX: Ducati rider Andrea Iannone won his maiden MotoGP race at the Austrian Grand Prix, giving the Italian manufacturer its first victory in six years.
OXFORD PLAINS: Reid Lanpher of Manchester won the Super Late Model 50-lap race at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Bobby Timmons of Windham was second followed by Dave Farrington of Jay, Corey Bubar of Windham and Shawn Knight of South Paris.
Matt Dufault of Turner won 30-lap in the Street Stock division race, Jamie Heath of Waterford was first in the 20-lap Bandit race and Jon Lizotte of Lewiston won in the 15-lap Figure 8 division.
