What rare leadership capacity was demonstrated by state Sen. Roger Katz recently in his vocal, transparent separation from the confines of party affiliation and allegiance (“Commentary: Why this Republican cannot support Donald Trump,” Aug. 5).

In our free speech democracy, we all enjoy expressing our ideas and opinions about political candidates, but it takes the unusual public servant to depart from his or her party in these candidate endorsements (or the withdrawal of same). Katz shows not only courage but also the nobler view of placing the goals and values of our country above party ideology.

Well done, Sen. Katz – your constituents in and around Augusta should be proud of their senator.
