MSGA Match Play down to Hutchins, Kannegieser

Matt Hutchins of The Woodlands Club and Will Kannegieser of Martindale Country Club advanced to the final of the Maine State Golf Association’s Match Play Invitational with quarterfinal and semifinal victories Wednesday at Brunswick Golf Club.

Hutchins, the Maine Amateur champion, trailed throughout his quarterfinal match before catching Kyle Alexander on the final hole for a 1-up victory. Hutchins followed with a 4-and-3 win over Judd Parsons in the semifinals.

Kannegieser also won 1-up in the quarterfinals, edging Jack Wyman, the low amateur at the Charlie’s Maine Open. Kannegieser then slipped past Mike Doran 3-and-2 in the semifinals.

Hutchins and Kannegieser tee off at 7 a.m. Thursday for the 18-hole final.

NEW ENGLAND JUNIOR AMATEUR: Cole Anderson of Camden shot a 10-under 200 over three rounds in two days to win the individual title by seven strokes at Cochecho Country Club in Dover, New Hampshire.

Anderson, who will be a sophomore at Camden Hills Regional High, shot two rounds of 65 on Tuesday and an even-par 70 in windy conditions on Wednesday.

Maine finished fourth in the six-team competition won by Massachusetts. Joining Anderson on the Maine team were Logan Thompson of Lincoln, Ryan Collins and Austin Legge of Cape Elizabeth, Lucas Roop of Gorham, Caleb Manuel of Topsham and Eric Dugas of Pittsfield.

U.S. AMATEUR: Qualifying medalist Alex Smalley, a sophomore at Duke, rallied to beat Scott Harvey 2 and 1 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

BASEBALL

BABE RUTH: Maine’s Tri-County was eliminated from the Babe Ruth 14 World Series with a 9-3 loss to Pacific Southwest champion Tri-Valley in the semifinals at Westfield, Massachusetts.

Wyatt Williamson’s two-run double in the sixth cut the deficit to 4-3 for Tri-County, which has players from Androscoggin, Cumberland and Oxford counties. But Tri-Valley scored five runs in the bottom of the inning.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed forward Matt Cullen to a one-year, $1 million contract for his 20th NHL season.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Beno Udrih is coming back to the Miami Heat on a one-year deal, getting another chance to back up fellow Slovenian Goran Dragic at point guard.

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN: Rafael Nadal beat Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas 6-1, 7-6 (4) to reach the third round at Mason, Ohio, and second-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland also advanced, beating American Jared Donaldson 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In women’s play, second-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany beat France’s Kristina Mladenovic 6-0, 7-5 and third-seeded Simona Halep of Romania edged Germany’s Annika Beck 6-3, 6-1.

FOOTBALL: Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly says DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire will share duties at quarterback when the Fighting Irish open the season Sept. 4 at Texas.

AUTO RACING
