Casco Bay Artisans, located at 68 Commercial St. in Portland, will show the abstract works of the late Robert Ward Wilson Jr. though Sept. 16. A free public reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Wilson, who died in 2013, was known for his colorful and visually pleasing abstracts, which were rarely shared with the public until now. His widow, Christine Sullivan, has released his artwork to be shown at Casco Bay Artisans.

According to a press release, “Wilson’s stated desire to ‘create paintings without reference to history or culture, but as a visual experience’ is evident in his gestural abstractions.”

He was raised in New England and attended Boston’s Museum School of Fine Arts and received his degree from Tufts University.
