TURNER — Kyle Champagne intercepted a pass on the 9-yard line with 1 second left as Westbrook held on for a 27-21 win over Leavitt in a Class B South football season opener Friday night.

Westbrook took the lead on a 75-yard touchdown run by Miece Louriero in the second quarter.

After a Leavitt touchdown cut the deficit to 7-6, Bailey Sawyer scored on a quarterback keeper with 8 seconds left in the first half to make it 14-6.

Louriero added two more touchdowns in the second half – a 4-yard run early in the third quarter and an 8-yard reception early in the fourth.

THORNTON ACADEMY 62, SANFORD 27: Michael Laverriere ran for three touchdowns and threw for two to lead the Trojans over the Spartans in Sanford.

Thornton, the two-time defending Class A champion, opened the game with five straight touchdowns, highlighted by a 31-yard pass from Laverriere to CJ LaBreck.

Keith Kerrigan had 10 carries for 96 yards and scored twice for Sanford.

CAPE ELIZABETH 29, FRYEBURG ACADEMY 6: Ryan Weare opened the scoring with a short touchdown run in the first quarter and added a TD reception in the second half to lead the Capers past the Raiders at Fryeburg.

The Capers extended their lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter when Ben Ekedahl scored on a 6-yard run.

Fryeburg cut into the deficit when quarterback Dawson Jones scored on a draw from 4 yards out on fourth down with 16.5 left in the first half.

Jack Glanville capped a touchdown drive with a 2-yard run on the opening drive of the third quarter.

DEERING 54, MASSABESIC 7: Nate Richards scored four touchdowns, including an 89-yard run, as the Rams rolled past the visiting Mustangs at Memorial Field.

Richards had three TD runs in the first quarter and scored on a 36-yard reception from Joe Pelletier as Deering built a 48-0 halftime lead.

Pelletier also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jean-Claude Butera in the fourth.

Raffaele Salamone had a 74-yard fumble return late in the first half.

Tommaso Mobiglia scored for Massabesic on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

WINDHAM 41, LEWISTON 8: Desmond Leslie threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, leading the Eagles to a victory over the Blue Devils in Windham.

Leslie hit Griffin Hebert for a 96-yard pass play in the first quarter. Blake Houser and Cam Hoffses added TD runs in the second quarter, and Leslie connected with Grant Jacobson for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

MT. ARARAT 48, NOBLE 13: Robert Hetherman scored three touchdowns and the Eagles raced out to a 42-7 halftime lead against the Knights in Topsham.

Ryan Mello added a pair of touchdowns, and Jacob O’Neill and Holden Brannan scored one touchdown apiece for Mt. Ararat.

MADISON/CARRABEC 35, OCEANSIDE 0: Shaun Whalen broke off a 62-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, and the Bulldogs shut out the Mariners in an opener at Rockland.

Whalen finished with 13 carries for 118 yards. Quarterback Evan Bess had a 50-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, while Nick Morales added a pair of touchdown runs.

Nate Raye was the leading rusher for Oceanside with 77 yards on 12 carries.
