I would like to challenge the Republicans of Maine to pick up their own garbage and pressure Gov. LePage to resign. His behavior goes far beyond what is acceptable even in the normal course of political disagreement.

He has called down violence upon Maine’s many law-abiding black and Hispanic people, who now must live in fear that they or their families will be harmed. He has many times transgressed the bounds of common civility. His words and actions not only harm Maine’s people and his own party, but also actively discourage business and tourism.

While I am a Democrat, I respect the Republican Party’s contributions to our nation’s political discourse, and I also respect many individual Republicans. It is time now for these Republicans to stand up for their party’s values and demand that LePage leave office.
