Students at Windham Christian Academy are starting school Tuesday, Sept. 6 a little bit safer, thanks to new flashing school signs installed in front of the campus on Roosevelt Trail.

The signs were installed Thursday, Aug. 25 and Monday, Aug. 29.

Principal Roy Mickelson said with an increase in traffic on Route 302 during the past years, the number of accidents involving students and parents entering and exiting school grounds has increased.

Although the stretch of road is posted with 15 mph school zone signs, the signs had no effect on traffic – in part, he said, because there were no flashing lights on the signs.

The Windham Police Department sat outside the school some mornings to patrol traffic on the stretch, but the problem persisted if police were not available.

The Maine Department of Transportation installed the original school zone signs, but said the cost for flashing school signs would need to be covered by the Academy. The academy is paying roughly $10,000 to purchase and install the flashing school signs.

Members of Windham Christian Academy’s maintenance crew install flashing school signs outside the school grounds on Roosevelt Trail. The signs are meant to address traffic and safety concerns outside the school.
