PORTLAND — Portland Water District spokeswoman Michelle Clements on Tuesday said a boil water order for Peaks Island, Little Diamond Island, and Cushing Island could be lifted by Wednesday morning, Sept. 7.

The order went into effect at 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, following a water main break on Willis Street on Great Diamond Island, Clements said. The main had been repaired Tuesday morning.

“Now they are flushing and getting things back to normal,” Clements said.

PWD said consumers should boil water for one minute at a rolling boil before drinking, making ice cubes, washing food,  brushing teeth, or doing any other activity involving consumption of water. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that could be in the water, the utility said.

Questions should be directed to the Portland Water District, State of Maine Drinking Water Program, at 761-8310, 287-2070 or [email protected].
