TD Bank plans to lay off about 35 back-office workers at its Lewiston operations center and outsource their jobs over the next several months, the bank said Wednesday.

“In order to enhance our customer experience and grow our business, TD is optimizing its operational efficiencies,” said Judith Schmidt, the bank’s vice president of corporate media relations. “As part of this effort, we have decided to move some roles to a third-party vendor. This will provide technical expertise that allows us to introduce more automation, improving our productivity. We do not expect this to impact our customer experience.”

With more than 3,200 employees throughout Maine, including 1,000 at the Lewiston center, Schmidt said TD Bank is committed to maintaining its strong presence in the state.

The TD bank layoff announcement comes a week after another Lewiston employer, Xerox, said it intends to close its customer service operation in Lewiston, displacing about 140 employees. It intends to close the East Avenue facility by the end of October. Xerox said it is closing the Lewiston center because a client’s contract is ending.

According to the Maine Department of Labor, about 10,000 people are now employed in customer care professions throughout the state. That figure doesn’t include recent hires in Brunswick, where housewares retailer Wayfair and customer service contract company SaviLinx are trying to hire a combined 750 customer service representatives.

Labor Department spokeswoman Julie Rabinowitz said the department is working with Xerox management to provide information about job opportunities to the affected workers. A Rapid Response session is being scheduled and will include a job fair on site at Xerox, she said, but the date has not yet been determined.

“The employees have skills needed by area employers and we anticipate that the bulk of our effort will be on helping transition the (workers) to a new employer in the greater Lewiston-Auburn area,” Rabinowitz said.
