FREEPORT — After 15 years of patriotic displays honoring America, Maine’s famed Freeport Flag Ladies say they will no longer continue their annual Sept. 11 memorial wave, according to WCSH-TV.

The Flag Ladies started out as a way to honor the lives lost on Sept. 11 and grew to become a unique showing of patriotism and solidarity. They have gathered to wave American flags on the streets of Freeport every Tuesday and every Sept. 11 since the attacks.

WCSH-TV reports that while the group has decided to retire their 9/11 remembrance, they plan to continue their weekly flag waving as well as various other appearances around the state.

Several supporters, including Sen. Susan Collins, joined the Flag Ladies for their final 9/11 wave on Sunday.
