I could not agree more with the Sept. 6 letter from Theo Balcomb regarding Catherine McAuley High School’s new name (“Maine Girls’ Academy fails name test”).

My two reactions to the new name were: 1) “Girls,” seriously? and 2) Why does McAuley want a name that sounds like a reform school for “girls”?

Agree with her or not, we may well have the first female president soon. The glass ceiling may finally be broken, and we should be empowering our young women more and more.

I attended McAuley as a member of its first freshman class in 1969, and although I have observed positive changes over time in moving toward the empowerment of its female students, this name might signal that the school has not progressed as far as I thought it had!
