KENNEBUNK — The Kennebunk football team has kicked off its 2016 campaign with an impressive 3-0 start.

The Rams grinded out a tough win over Greely, topped Gorham in a lopsided victory, and pushed past Morse last Friday.

Kennebunk fields a young team, led by a handful of freshmen and sophomore players.

Despite the young crowd, head coach Joe Rafferty believes his team has what it takes to go all the way in the Class B South division.

The key will be to stay focused, according to Rafferty.

“I think with us it’s just all about staying focused. We’re young and we play young – we get excited, but we need to think about the pace at which we’re playing … just being a bit more patient. We need to show them that we need to settle down and do what we have to do,” said Rafferty.

In order to adapt his team to a new speed of play, Rafferty and the Kennebunk coaching staff have made adjustments to the playbook and have added in a few new wrinkles as well.

“We have traditionally been a big option team, but right now we have been flirting with this I-formation,” said Rafferty. “That’s something we need to make a decision on. I don’t necessarily like one more than the other, but it’s something we would like to get down.”

Although the Rams are excited to jump to a 3-0 start, they also look forward to the challenge of facing teams like Marshwood and Biddeford down the road.

For now, Kennebunk will continue to ride the wave and square off against York this Saturday.
