Windham holds first Public Safety Day

Windham public safety officers, representatives from AARP Maine and local legislators are teaming up to offer Windham’s first Public Safety Day, Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Activities will take place at the Public Safety Building at 375 Gray Road, and the Food Pantry up the street.

The event will feature K-9 demonstrations, touch-a-fire-truck and tours of the Public Safety building led by police officers and firefighters. Attendees also can bring prescription drugs for proper disposal and learn about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning from fire-rescue personnel.

AARP Maine will offer free document shredding to protect against identity theft  and also a seminar on scam awareness, focusing on scams directed toward the elderly.

The Food Pantry asks people to consider donating items such as paper goods and cleaning products.

Windham’s legislative delegation – Sen. Bill Diamond, Rep. Mark Bryant and Rep. Patrick Corey – will be on hand to answer questions about new Maine laws pertaining to safety and other issues.

Light refreshments will be available.

Candidates run unopposed

There are no contested races in Windham’s election for municipal officers, to be held Nov. 8.

Councilor Robert Muir and Council Chairwoman Donna Chapman are running for re-election for one At-Large and one South District seat, respectively. Jarrod Maxfield is running unopposed for the North District seat, previously held by Councilor Roy Moore, who is not seeking re-election.

There are no candidates for a one-year At-Large term on the council, to fill a seat previously held by the Tommy Gleason, who died in May.

Eric Colby is running for re-election to the Regional School Unit 14 Board of Directors. Scott Mclean is running for a vacant School Board seat, previously held by Jennifer Fleck.

Jewish holiday services to be held in Conway, N.H.

Har Lavan, a newly formed non-affiliated Jewish group, will be celebrating the holidays throughout the year in Conway, N.H. Cantor Marlena Fuerstman will celebrate the New Year Services cycle with the group. All services, open to residents in the Lakes Region, will be held at Salyards Center for the Arts at 100 Main St., in Conway.

Har Lavan Holiday Services will hold Erev Rosh Hashana Services, Sunday, Oct. 2, beginning at 6:45 p.m.; morning service, Monday, Oct. 3, 9:30 a.m., and Tashlich and Children’s Services about 1:30 p.m. Yom Kippur Services will begin with Kol Nidre Tuesday Oct. 11, at 5:45 p.m. Yom Kippur Services will begin on Wednesday, October 12, at 10:00 a.m.; Yizkor will be at about 12:30 p.m.; Mincha and Children’s Services will start at 5:45 p.m.; and the Shofar will be blown at about 6:30 p,m.
