Two University of Maine football players were honored by the Colonial Athletic Association for their efforts in the Black Bears’ 35-31 comeback victory over Bryant on Saturday.

Senior lineman Pat Ricard was named CAA defensive player of the week and freshman running back Josh Mack was named rookie of the week.

Ricard, who switches from defensive end to tackle throughout the game, made eight tackles and had a career-high three sacks. He had 3.5 tackles for a loss on a defense that limited Bryant to 35 rushing yards and had four sacks.

Mack, a true freshman, rushed for 151 yards and three second-half touchdowns. He gave Maine the lead with a 9-yard run with 10:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. Mack gained 103 of his rushing yards in the second half and also scored on runs of 2 and 25 yards.

Mack also was named the STATS FCS national freshman of the week.

“Obviously it’s nice to get recognition,” said Maine coach Joe Harasymiak. “To be rewarded like that means you won the game and played well.

“Our defense all starts with Pat. And Josh was able to put some life into the running game in the second half.”

Maine trailed 21-0 late in the first half before staging its comeback. The Black Bears play at Delaware on Saturday.
