PORTLAND (AP) — Maine’s largest city is getting ready to host a forum on Arctic diplomacy that will include leaders from around the world.

The Arctic Council’s Senior Arctic Officials meeting will take place from today to Thursday. Officials from the council’s eight member nations and a host of non-governmental organizations will be in Portland.

U.S. Ambassador for Oceans and Fisheries David Balton will chair the meeting. It is expected to focus on issues such as climate change, shipping, the Arctic’s indigenous groups and energy issues.

Balton has said the forum is the first time the council has held such a meeting on U.S. soil outside Alaska or Washington, D.C.
