Jeffrey Mayhew was sentenced to 118 days in jail, a fine of more than $1,000 and he is barred from owning an animal again, according to WCSH.

Mayhew was accused in late June of driving his truck with the puppy tied to its bumper for two-tenths of a mile before stopping. He was arrested the next day when police came to check on the dog and allegedly found Mayhew with illegal drugs.

In court Mayhew said he forgot to untie the dog from his bumper after spending the day at a friend’s house, WCSH reported. He said he never meant to hurt the dog.

Passers-by flagged down police and reported seeing the 6-month-old pitbull mix being dragged behind the pickup. Witnesses said Mayhew was dazed and seemed “out of it.”

The prosecutor said Mayhew was high on drugs at the time.

The dog was treated by a local veterinarian for lacerations to his paws and legs and released.
