Bayview Gallery is currently exhibiting recent paintings by Maine artist Jon Allan Marshall — his second solo show with the gallery. The public is invited to a reception with the artist on Saturday from 4-6 p. m. at Bayview Gallery, located at 58 Maine St. in Brunswick.
Marshall describes himself as a “reluctant” plein air painter, as a lot of the work occurs in his studio. He paints from memory guided by his field sketches. Many of the places depicted in his landscapes are real and recognizable, while others are tempered with imagination to effect the quality of light and shadow, of the movement and stillness he seeks to show in his work.

Following his 2012 exhibit, Portland art historian and critic Daniel Kany commented on Marshall’s work writing that he “paints like a 17th-century Dutch master: He is dedicated to glazing. Glazing is the technique of overlaying many layers of thin, transparent paint to render light, atmosphere and spatial effects within a painting. It dates back to the earliest sophisticated use of oil paint by Jan van Eyck (ca. 1390-1440) and remains to this day most deeply associated with Dutch master painting.”
Marshall’s work will be available for viewing through Nov. 6. For more information, contact the Bayview Gallery at ( 207) 729-5500.
