BIDDEFORD — Biddeford police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck that may have hit a man who was found dead in a parking lot on Route 111 Monday.

Local and state police responded around 2:30 p.m. Monday to a fatality in the parking lot between Play It Again Sports and Biddeford Savings Bank on Route 111, which also is known as Alfred Street. Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, identified the victim as Mathew Perry, 31, of Biddeford.

Police arrived to find Perry on the asphalt. McCausland said Perry may have been struck by a pickup truck in the parking lot. The police are looking for the driver and the truck, described as a blue Chevrolet from the mid-80s.

McCausland declined to say more about the investigation.

“I think we need to get the input from the medical examiner’s office as of cause of death,” he said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

An employee at the sporting goods store, who did not want to give his name, said he heard a noise, went outside and found the man on the pavement. Another employee at Play it Again Sports said police asked for surveillance footage from a camera pointing through a front window of the store, but the images showed little because of glare from the late afternoon sun.

In the parking lot, Perry was shirtless and wore a neck brace. It appeared EMTs had been attempting to treat him.

Perry’s parents were on scene by about 4:45 p.m., but they declined to talk to media.

State police detectives arrived about 5 p.m., but no information was available as to how the man died.

McCausland asked anyone with information about Perry’s death to call the Biddeford police department at 282-5127.
