Surrounded by controversy, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will visit Maine for a campaign event Saturday.

The event is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The doors will open at noon.

Before going to Bangor, Trump is scheduled to campaign in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, starting at noon at Toyota of Portsmouth.

Trump will be in Maine to try to win the electoral vote in the state’s 2nd Congressional District. Maine awards two of its electors to the candidate who gets the most votes statewide and one to the winner in each of its two congressional districts.

Although Maine’s electoral vote has never been split, polls suggest that Trump is running well in the 2nd District, which covers the central and northern part of the state, and could potentially take its electoral vote. Those polls also indicate that his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton, will likely carry the 1st District and possibly the overall total.

Trump is now dealing with a growing number of accusations that he kissed or groped women without their consent. The accusations follow the release last week of a 2005 videotape in which he boasted about such actions.

At Sunday’s presidential debate, Trump denied that he had made sexual advances to women, dismissed the discussion on the tape as “locker room talk” and denied the specific allegations by more than a half-dozen women this week that he made sexual advances to them.

Dozens of politicians have denounced Trump’s remarks. Some withdrew their endorsements of him in response to the release of the tape.

On Friday, Trump suggested that one of his accusers wasn’t attractive enough to merit his attention and said the others are seeking publicity. He has also blamed Clinton and a conspiracy involving the news media for the accusations.

Trump has campaigned in Maine three times – in Portland in March, Bangor in June and Portland again in August.

This week, Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, campaigned in Orono for her mother Thursday.
