A 19-year-old Greenville man was killed in a fire that destroyed a duplex in the Piscataquis County town on Moosehead Lake early Saturday.

Stephen Richards’ body was located in the rubble of the building Saturday afternoon, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.

McCausland said the cause of the fire is not suspicious but investigators from the Maine Fire Marshal’s office may never be able to pinpoint the cause because of the extensive damage.

The fire started shortly before 4 a.m. and quickly swept through the duplex at 56 Washington St.

Three occupants of one side of the duplex escaped without injury.

Richards’ body was located with the help of excavators used to remove debris from the flattened building, McCausland said.
