NEW YORK — Jimmy Howard made 32 saves to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Thomas Vanek and Drew Miller scored for Detroit, which improved to 2-2.

After beginning the season with two straight losses, Detroit has won consecutive games.

JETS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 4: Patrik Laine completed his hat trick in overtime as host Winnipeg beat Toronto.

Laine also scored twice in the third period as Winnipeg rallied from a 4-1 deficit.

CAPITALS: Goalie Braden Holtby raised more than $20,000 for charity in auctioning off his Team Canada World Cup of Hockey mask. The money will go toward two of Canadian rocker Gord Downie’s charitable foundations. Downie, The Tragically Hip frontman, is being treated for a brain tumor.
