From the Journal Tribune: “York County Commissioners took some tentative increases to the proposed 2007 York County budget Monday but it appears they still have a long way to go to reach the limits set by state law under L.D. 1. And while no one raised the issue of possible layoffs Monday, it is likely the matter will be brought up at the next session, set for 4 p.m. Friday at York County Jail.”

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Four men today robbed the First National Bank of Biddeford’s branch office here of an estimated $11,000 shortly before 9 a.m., police said. The money was taken from cash drawers after the bandits forced five people inside a vault. No one was hurt during the holdup, Executive Vice President Archie B. Maxwell of the parent institution in Biddeford said. The men are believed to have fled the scene in two Massachusetts vehicles, Maine State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are conducting an investigation of the robbery.”

100 years ago

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “A verdict for $4,900 damages against Dr. Herbert F. Twitchell of Portland in favor of Carl F. McCann of South Portland was returned Monday evening by the jury of the supreme judicial court after being out about an hour and a half. Action was brought for $10,000 by the plaintiff, McCann, who claimed that owing to unskilled treatment of a fractured bone in the let forearm resulting from an automobile accident the arm is shorter than the other and interfers with his employment. ”
