ELLSWORTH — The search for a man suspected of firing a gun at a car and its occupants Sunday night ended peacefully Tuesday morning.

Aaron Wagner, 41, of Ellsworth, was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday without incident when he tried to enter his apartment on Deane Street, Ellsworth Police chief Pete Bickmore said. Bickmore said Wagner’s apartment had been under surveillance by police since the shooting occurred Sunday around 6 p.m.

Police said Wagner fired a gun at a car near a Deane Street apartment complex, shattering the rear window while several people sat inside. No one was hurt.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s office, Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service, Maine Marine Patrol, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and several other agencies assisted in the search for Wagner. Ellsworth schools were closed Monday as a precaution.

Wagner was arrested on charges of reckless conduct with a firearm and aggravated criminal mischief. He was being held in the Hancock County Jail Tuesday evening.
