A 38-second video of a wrecking ball destroying a section of the Bath viaduct is getting a lot of attention on social media.
The video, recorded Tuesday night by the Bath Police Department and posted on the department’s Facebook page, had more than 58,000 page views as of Wednesday evening.
It takes the wrecking ball, held by a crane, three strikes before the two-lane elevated viaduct crumbles onto the road under the bridge.
The video is described by police on Facebook as “a little peek at the destruction of the Route One viaduct.”
On Oct. 11, the Maine Department of Transportation shut down the quarter-mile viaduct. Crews then began to tear down the structure, which opened in 1958. The viaduct will be rebuilt at a cost of more than $12 million.
The new viaduct is scheduled to reopen on Memorial Day. More than 18,000 vehicles a day cross the viaduct, according to the transportation department.
