Mark Lawrence, a Democrat from South Berwick and a former state legislator, is running against Jonathan Michael Moynahan, a Republican from Eliot, for an open seat in Maine House District 2.

The district includes Eliot, part of Kittery and part of South Berwick. The incumbent, Democrat Roberta “Bobbi” Beavers of Eliot, did not seek re-election.

Lawrence, 58, is an attorney who served as a state representative and senator from 1988 to 2000, the last four years as president of the Maine Senate. He served as York County district attorney from 2003 to 2010.

Lawrence did not respond to a survey seeking his positions on key issues.

Moynahan, 27, stresses his status as an outsider in his responses to a Portland Press Herald survey.

“I feel that we need down to earth, level-headed representation in Augusta; career politicians have got us in a mess, not just on the state level but on the national front as well,” he said. “I represent the younger generation that offers new ideas and solutions to problems that have been facing the state for decades.”

Moynahan opposes legalization of marijuana, the proposed increase in the minimum wage and the referendum to expand background checks for private gun purchases.
