The Scarborough Town Council is expected to give final approval this week to the ad hoc Public Safety Complex Building Committee and approve a resolution supporting Small Business Saturday.

The council meets Wednesday, Nov. 2, after the Current’s print deadline.

The building committee will report back with its findings and recommendations no later than next August. The committee will consist of 11 members and have a budget of $50,000 in order to do a thorough review of the needs and costs associated with construction of a new public safety building.

At a workshop this past spring, the council was presented with an updated long-range facilities plan that put a new public safety facility at the top of the list of needs.

The 11 members of the committee will include both the police and fire chiefs, two members of the Town Council, six residents and local developer and construction expert Rocco Risbara.

As for a resolution supporting what’s become known as Small Business Saturday, which is celebrated the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the council said the town’s small businesses make contributions to “our local economy and community.”

The document also noted that small businesses around the country employ the majority of workers, are responsible for the majority of new jobs created in the past 20 years and that 87 percent of consumers agree they are critical to the overall economic health of the U.S.

“Scarborough, Maine supports our local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy and preserve our neighborhoods.

“Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Scarborough Town Council proclaims Nov. 26, 2016, Small Business Saturday and urges the resident of our community . . . to support small businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year,” the resolution reads.
