Republican Rep. Lester Ordway is running for re-election against Democrat Pamela Smith in House District 23, which covers part of Standish.

Ordway was elected to the House in 2015 to complete the unexpired term of Mike Shaw, who moved out of the district.

Ordway did not respond to a survey about his background and positions on key issues.

Smith, 61, is a lawyer and legal advocate for children in the court system. In her responses to the Portland Press Herald survey, Smith said she wants to help break through partisanship and be a catalyst for compromise.

Smith did not take a position on the ballot proposal to require background checks on private gun purchases, saying the proposal is poorly written and would put onerous burdens on responsible gun owners. She said she supports ballot proposals to raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020 and legalize the recreational use of marijuana.
