An overnight standoff in Waldoboro has ended with a man wanted by police since September in custody.

Police had been on the lookout for Brian J. Bennett since September when he evaded arrest by escaping through a hole in the floor of his house on Flanders Road in Waldoboro. He was wanted on several warrants in connection with burglaries that involved firearms.

Police from multiple agencies were in a standoff with Bennett, 36, at a home in Waldoboro that started around 9:30 p.m. Thursday and lasted until around 7 a.m. Friday, when Bennett was taken into custody, Waldoboro Police Chief William Labombarde said at the scene shortly after the standoff ended.

Labombarde said no shots were fired and no one was injured, though police did use tear gas cannisters. Multiple neighbors were evacuated during the standoff.

After being checked by paramedics, Bennett was to be taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, according to police. They did not immediately say what charges he will face.

Labombarde said multiple agencies – including the Maine Warden Service, the Maine State Police, Waldoboro police and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office – worked together to find Bennett and take him into custody.

“It was intense,” he said of the efforts to locate Bennett.

Miller Elementary School in Waldoboro is closed Friday because of the standoff, according to WCSH6.
