Thank you, Bill Nemitz, for sharing your emotions and feelings in your recent Sunday column about your dog, Fairbanks. I am sure you tugged at the hearts of many pet owners who have had to say “goodbye” to a friend and companion.

For anyone who has loved and lost a pet, this was a reminder of how much we love them, how they become part of the family and how hard it is to let them go. They truly love us unconditionally and depend on us to do the right thing. They touch us in so many ways.

I too lost a wonderful dog of 16 years, in July, and saying “goodbye” to Jenny was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

Thankfully, our veterinarian, like yours, had the understanding and compassion to help us say “goodbye” with the respect that our dog deserved.

All I can hope is that you remember Banks for all that he did for you and others, but especially as the boy with the big smile and greeting you with that tail wagging. RIP, Banks.
