High winds on Friday knocked out power to more than 11,600 customers in central and southern Maine.
Wind speeds were 18 mph with gusts of up to 28 mph at the Portland International Jetport, according to the National Weather Service. The wind blew tree limbs into power lines and disrupted service.
Power outages were scattered across Central Maine Power’s service area. In Cumberland County, the town of Freeport reported the highest number of customers without electricity at noon Friday, with more than half the approximately 4,600 CMP customers affected, according to CMP. Towns in Kennebec, Oxford and Somerset counties were also without power.
Power company crews were working on restoring electricity, but more outages are a possibility as gusty weather persists, said CMP spokeswoman Gail Rice.
As of 8:40 p.m. Friday, CMP had 785 customers without power.
Emera Maine, which serves northern and eastern Maine, reported 728 customers without power.
