A Sanford man has been indicted on a manslaughter charge by a York County grand jury in the boating death of his twin brother earlier this year.

Jonathan Beattie, 31, of Kimball Street is charged with manslaughter, reckless conduct with a weapon and two counts of operating under the influence, according to the grand jury indictments released Wednesday.

The Maine Warden Service said Beattie was operating a boat on Mousam Lake in Shapleigh on the evening of May 28. His brother, Jeff Beattie, was riding on the bow of the 17-foot motorboat when he fell into the lake.

Jeff Beattie was run over by the motorboat, wardens said. Beattie was pulled back aboard the boat and taken to shore, where emergency workers and others tried to revive him. He was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford and by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he died from his injuries.

At the time of the accident, the brothers were accompanied by their spouses and a friend. Wardens took a blood sample for drug and alcohol testing, as is routine whenever there in a fatal accident.

Jeff Beattie left behind a wife and two young children.
