OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Deputy Chief Timothy DeLuca has accepted a position as Police Chief in Houlton.

DeLuca has been a familiar face in town for many years, and began his career with the Old Orchard Beach Police department as a summer reserve officer 32 years ago.

DeLuca will begin his new position on Jan. 3.

DeLuca said in a written statement the decision to embark on this “new adventure” was a difficult one, as he’s had the privilege to work with the community of Old Orchard Beach and its outstanding police department for many years.

“I owe a debt of gratitude to the community and all the fine officers past and present,” he said. “I have many dear friends that I have served with, in many good and trying times that will not be forgotten.”

DeLuca has been known for reaching out to the public and building ties in the community.

Assistant Town Manager V. Louise Reid said her friendship with DeLuca goes back to the days when she was directing the building project and activities at the Salvation Army Seaside Pavilion.

She said DeLuca was very helpful through the permitting process and addressing traffic and neighborhood concerns.

“More importantly he became a friend to The Salvation Army.  I remember riding by a retired officer’s home on a cold winter day and seeing the 88-year-old retired officer out struggling to shovel,” said Reid. “As I was driving down the street I saw Tim get out of the patrol car; go over and walk the woman back to her door; and took the shovel and cleared her walks. This is the kind of person he is.

His interaction with this community is unmatched and will be terribly missed but he deserves the promotion to Chief and we wish him our best,” Reid said.
