HOLLIS — Maine State Police say a man who tried to help a woman who was being assaulted by her boyfriend fired shots from his handgun, wounding the woman in the stomach and the leg.

At this point, no charges have been filed against Joshua Weldon, 30, said Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

McCausland in a statement Wednesday night said the boyfriend of shooting victim Andria Richardson, Ryan Gilliken, faces two assault charges.

Gilliken, 30, who shared a home with Richardson at 490 River Road,  is charged with what McCausland called a “violent” domestic violence assault on her  and a second count of simple assault charge against Weldon.

Richardson, 32, underwent surgery at Maine Medical Center  in Portland Tuesday night  following the 8:30 p.m. shooting. She is expected to recover.

McCausland said Richardson’s three young children were home when the shooting took place, and arrangements were made for relatives to care for them

Weldon rented an apartment at the 490 River Road  where Richardson and Gilliken lived.

Domestic violence assault is a Class C felony and carries a maximum prison term of five years, upon conviction.

A York County Jail corrections supervisor this morning said Gilliken is held without bail pending a scheduled first appearance at Springvale District Court by video link from the jail Friday.
