AUGUSTA — Maine Democrats have re-elected Phil Bartlett as party chairman at a time when progressives are calling for a recommitment to the state’s rural working class.
Bartlett faced challenges by Diane Russell and Jonathan Fulford, who want the party to expand out of Portland.
The chairman has worked on grassroots efforts and training potential candidates. He also supported Democrat Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential bid.
Russell backed Independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sander’s campaign and spearheaded a push to reform how the party uses superdelegates.
Fulford is a former farmer who owns a construction company. He has twice lost close races against Republican Senate President Michael Thibodeau.
Fulford said Maine Democrats’ losses in the House and the 2nd Congressional District demonstrate disconnect with voters that question the party’s direction.
Peggy Schaffer was re-elected vice chair.
