WEX, a provider of corporate payment services based in South Portland, has created a position to lead all aspects of corporate technology.

David Cooper has joined the company in the newly created role of chief technology officer, according to a news release from the company. In this position, Cooper will spearhead corporate IT and platform strategy, enterprise architecture, program management, information security and IT infrastructure operations.

“David brings a depth and breadth of experience across payments and technology, combined with a strategic acumen and proven track record that will be a tremendous asset to WEX,” Melissa D. Smith, president and chief executive officer, said in the release. “We are confident that his leadership in technology and contribution to corporate-level strategic initiatives that support our global growth goals will make David a great addition to our team.”

Before joining WEX, Cooper held several senior technology positions, including head of global operations at GlobeOne, senior vice president of technology at Green Dot, and chief technology officer and senior vice president of product development at both Fiserv and CashEdge.

WEX, which employs about 700 locally, has been growing in the past few years through acquisitions. In its October filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, strong earnings pushed the company’s stock to a 2016 high of $108.60 per share. WEX, which derives about two-thirds of its revenue from fuel-payment systems for fleet vehicles, reported revenue of $287.8 million in the third quarter. Quarterly revenue was $7.7 million higher than analysts expected and up 27.3 percent from $226.1 million in the third quarter of 2015.

The company has invested heavily in technology as it expanded into new markets such as health care and travel.

Cooper earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and microprocessor systems from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.
