WINDHAM — Dr. Richard Nickerson, director of choral activities at Windham High School, is among the 10 finalists for a 2017 Music Educator Grammy award.

The award, now in its fourth year, recognizes educators “who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in schools,” according to the awards website.

The winner will receive a $10,000 honorarium and will be flown to Los Angeles for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony. All finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium, and each of the finalist’s schools will receive a matching grant.

Nickerson said he is humbled being named a finalist for the award. He’s “thankful for all of my students, current and former, as I have learned from them each and every day,” he said in an email.

Nickerson has been the choir director for nearly three decades at Windham, where he conducts three choirs and teaches courses in music theory, guitar and music industry. He is the conductor of the renowned Windham Chamber Singers, a 40-member choir with a two-decade history of statewide and international performances.

In addition to his duties at Windham High School, Nickerson is minister of music at North Windham Union Church.
