A Skowhegan woman whose mobile home burned Dec. 5 in a fire apparently started because she was smoking while on oxygen has died, according to a statement Monday from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Michelle Sweet, 53, died Thursday at Maine Medical Center in Portland after having been seriously injured in the fire on Hilltop Drive in Skowhegan, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the department, who cited the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

She had escaped the mobile home at Ames trailer park in Skowhegan and was found outside near her car, the statement says.

Sweet’s death was the 20th fire death in Maine this year, the department says.
