An 18-year-old man was charged early Thursday morning with the theft of a sport utility vehicle in Bath.

Bath Police Chief Michael Field identified the suspect as 18-year-old Damon Peacock of Bath.

Officer Nick Green was on patrol on Front Street around 1 a.m. when he spotted a 1997 red Ford Explorer with three people inside. The SUV had been reported stolen on Wednesday, said a news release on the department’s Facebook page.

Green activated his lights and siren, but Peacock ignored him. Green then called for backup and another officer helped him pull the SUV over at the intersection of Washington and Centre streets.

Peacock was arrested and charged with operating without a license, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, failure to stop and illegal possession of liquor by a minor – all misdemeanors.

Peacock was taken to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset where he is being held on $2,000 cash bail.

A 19-year-old male passenger and a 15-year-old female passenger were questioned and released.
