ALAMEDA, Calif. — Suspended Oakland Raiders pass rusher Aldon Smith will not be reinstated by the NFL this season.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Friday that the league has deferred a decision on Smith’s petition for reinstatement and will begin consideration in March. Pro Football Talk first reported the decision by the league.

Smith had been suspended in November 2015 for violating the league’s policy on substance abuse.

VIKINGS: Running back Adrian Peterson will not suit up Sunday in the season finale against the Bears.

Peterson, dealing with knee and groin injuries, did not practice this week and has been ruled out. The Vikings running back played 12 snaps in his Dec. 18 return from September knee surgery and has not played since.

COLTS: Outside linebacker Robert Mathis will retire following Indianapolis’ finale against Jacksonville on Sunday.

Mathis spent all 14 of his NFL seasons with the Colts and his 122 career sacks are a franchise record. But at age 35 and with his contract about to expire, Mathis decided to leave the game on his own terms.

SEAHAWKS: Michael Bennett and Seattle reached agreement on a three-year contract extension that will keep the defensive end under contract through the 2020 season.

JETS: Matt Forte’s first season with New York is officially over. The veteran running back was placed on injured reserve a few hours after being ruled out for the finale against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

FINES: Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones was fined $18,231 for his forearm shiver to quarterback Trevor Siemian.

Also docked was Chiefs tight end Demetrius Harris ($12,154) for using the football as a prop after catching a 2-yard TD toss.

Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane was hit with the biggest fine of Week 16 – $27,236 – for an uncalled hit on Cardinals tight end Jermaine Gresham, who was docked $12,154 for taunting after the play.

And Jets right tackle Brandon Shell was fined $9,115 for a facemask penalty during Malcom Butler’s interception return in a game against New England.
